Members FAQs

  • We prefer electronic payments for accuracy and convenience, but cash payments may be accepted, when put it an envelope and sign with the the amount inside, students name, and what they are paying for. Please confirm with the instructor if you need to make a payment with cash

  • Notify your instructor in advance if you'll be missing a session. They can provide guidance on how to catch up on missed content.

  • Report any injuries to your instructor immediately. They will advise you on the best course of action and may provide modified exercises when necessary.

  • Grading schedules typically occur around 3 or 4 times a year, but it's important to note that mere scheduling doesn't guarantee automatic eligibility for grading. Students cannot independently determine their eligibility or choose when to be graded. The notification of eligibility for grading will be communicated through email, initiated by the instructor when they believe the student is adequately prepared.

  • Double grading may be considered in exceptional cases, primarily based on a student's outstanding performance during grading. Occasionally, a student's yearly progress may also be taken into account as a bonus factor. It's crucial to note that students cannot independently opt for a double grading; instead, they must choose the next immediate grade above their current belt when completing a grading form. Approval for a double grading requires consent from at least two instructors following a thorough grading examination. Subsequently, students will be notified of the results on the designated results day.

  • Remember, progress varies from person to person, and it's essential to focus on your own development rather than comparing yourself to others. With dedication and a proactive approach, you'll likely see improvement in your skills over time. Also, keep in mind that your journey is unique, and comparing it to others may not accurately reflect your own individual progress and achievements. If your instructor indicates that you're not fully ready to grade, it implies there are specific areas you need to focus/work on before being deemed ready for grading to minimising the risk of a grading failure. In such instances, instructors may provide conditions that students must fulfil to enhance their grading eligibility before an upcoming grading, termed a "Conditional Grading Offer." It's crucial to note that meeting eligibility criteria doesn't guarantee an automatic pass; success in grading is earned through demonstrated skills and proficiency.

  • A conditional grading offer is extended to students who may slightly fall below the grading eligibility standards. In such cases, to enhance their eligibility for grading, students are presented with optional conditions. For instance, attending a half-term camp or participating in additional sessions for 4-8 weeks could be suggested conditions. It's important to note that conditions may vary depending on individual circumstances. If the specified conditions are fulfilled before the grading, instructors will consider the student eligible, as they would have demonstrated improvement during the conditional period.

  • Attendance at camps is encouraged for a comprehensive training experience, but it's not mandatory unless you have been set conditions to meet from your Instructor. Participation in camps benefits your overall skill development three to five times greater than what you would typically gain in one month of your regular monthly sessions.

  • Mass Sparring (MSS) is required and mandatory for all students with a Yellow Belt and above, except in cases of medical conditions or injuries. For White Belts, Yellow Tags, and Tiger White Belts with any colour Tag, attendance is optional, provided they have the Full Sparring Kit, available for purchase from our store. Mass Sparring is a valuable experience that enhances your sparring skills and fosters a sense of community. If you have any concerns or conditions, please communicate with your instructor in advance.

  • Yes, all Yellow Belts and above must own their WT Approved Full Sparring kits, including students with medical conditions or injuries, prioritising protection, health, and safety. Sparring kits are not only utilised for fights but also for training exercises and additional protection. It is recommended for beginners to purchase a sparring kit when signing up as a member, for the exclusive discounted offers available within the start up packages.

  • Attending seminars is beneficial for skill enhancement. While not compulsory, it's recommended to participate whenever possible.

  • Event payment deadlines vary. Refer to specific event announcements or check with your instructor for payment due dates.

  • Yes, the number of mandatory annual competitions varies based on your belt level:

Yellow Tags to Green Tags = 1 Mandatory Annual Competition

Green Belts to Blue Belts = 2 Mandatory Annual Competitions

Red Tags & Above = 3 Mandatory Annual Competitions

Apart from the specified requirements, competitions throughout the year are generally optional. However, for certain events like The Annual British National Taekwondo Championships, students must be personally selected by their instructor to participate.

  • If you prefer sparring, you can specialise in this aspect of Taekwondo training. However, remember that this won't exempt you from standard basics sessions, and knowledge of Poomsae (Taeguek 1-9) remains essential for grading purposes.

  • While we encourage a well-rounded training experience, if Poomsae is your primary interest, you can focus solely on it. However, keep in mind that this won't exempt you from standard sparring sessions, Mass Sparring (MSS), or sparring requirements during your grading.

  • With dedication, training, and participation in competitions, you have the opportunity to strive for and achieve the title of a British Champion and MORE. With Tsunami Taekwondo the possibilities are endless.
